31 October 2007 - 12:08Mid-day report

hi!  it’s the middle of the day.  i’m late for class, but i thought i’d give you guys the “update”.  the morning was uneventful: i slept late, because i went to bed late.  then i read.  then i drank a lot of coffee.  then i reorganized all the furniture in my room.  then i wrote this post.  then IN THE FUTURE, i put on my socks and my shoes, and went to class, and then if i’m lucky for a run after class and then finish my homework and do some reading and then go to sleep and similar tomorrow but with a slightly different structure and different classes and people and times.

29 October 2007 - 17:07Yo tengo un blog

I wanted to let everyone know that I have a website finally of my own, www.k-jezermorton.com. About 4 years ago Thomas told me that if you were gonna be a freelancer, you had to have a website, and it’s taken four whole years to make this one so you know it’s really good.

It’s also going to act as a way for me to keep my friends and fam updated to what I’m doing during the next 8 months or so, (starting in December actually), during which time I will be “living abroad” with my husband and will not be reachable using typical means like phones.

It’s going to have photos that I hopefully will remember to take, a blog of my pearls of wisdom, an archive of my brilliant contributions to the journalistic canon, and that’s all.

This is I guess what the kids are doing now vis-a-vis not having to send out mass emails with subject headings like “Machu Picchu: My Thoughts”, which actually, I recall when Gabe was in Morocco in the eleventh grade, before we even knew about blogs (well, I didn’t anyway), he sent out emails like that and they were quite good. But that just goes to show how our willingness to read has eroded in these awful times, etc etc.

So, I will still be contributing to Speak Peppery (you’re welcome!), but I will save all the boring stuff for my own blog, which will mostly only be read by my family anyway.

28 October 2007 - 21:35Halloween Structures

1. Happy birthday to our enigmatic guest blogger, Omar; and to our equally enigmatic rival blogger, Ana.
2. Here are some photos of my costume from the philosopher’s annual holloween party; I brought wood and duct tape, and invited partygoers to build me up, as they saw fit. (I should also say that the philosophers put on an impressive show last night; there were more great costumes represented than i can remember at any other halloween party.)

Pictures after the jump. [Thanks to Kate and Saba for the photos.]

25 October 2007 - 22:05thor’s day

al.jpg

the creative moment of the day came when i was packing lunch: i combined left-over rice, left-over cous-cous, a chopped up tomato, and a new batch of lima beans (which i fry with garlic) together in a platic container. medium appetizing, but filling. its important to keep some consistency between days, like eating the same thing twice— who would want to read a book where one page didn’t relate to the last? later, i felt confused about actualism… do i really need to say possible worlds exist in the actual world? also, an old shirt, probably my dad’s resurfaced into my consciousness, and i wore it; it has criss-crossing colors, like plaid, but the colors are neon. i wore it with an old sweater. i’m planning a style reboot. but how should i wear my hair?

25 October 2007 - 12:24Thursday

This morning I had raisin toast and almond butter for breakfast. I woke up at about 8:15. Today is my day off from the farm, but it’s not really a day off, since Thursday is the day I clean the house of my gay “uncles” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. I also do their laundry, fold it nicely, empty their trash and water their plants. So, I did all that stuff by noon, since I”m a pretty fast house-cleaner, and then I pretty much hung out and ate an apple for about a half an hour, and then I did some bonus cleaning for them so I wouldn’t feel like I was stealing their money. Then, I made sure not to trip the house-alarm when I left, and I came home and I just read the Hilarious shouts and murmurs from this week’s New Yorker, which is by Ian Frazier.

Thanks Gabe for helping me overcome my longstanding writers block.

24 October 2007 - 6:50mr. rogers

“Some public stations, as well as commercial stations, program the “Neighborhood” at hours when some children cannot use it … I have always felt that with the advent of all of this new technology that allows people to tape the “Neighborhood” off-the-air, and I’m speaking for the “Neighborhood” because that’s what I produce, that they then become much more active in the programming of their family’s television life. Very frankly, I am opposed to people being programmed by others. My whole approach in broadcasting has always been “You are an important person just the way you are. You can make healthy decisions.” Maybe I’m going on too long, but I just feel that anything that allows a person to be more active in the control of his or her life, in a healthy way, is important.”
-Fred Rogers testifying before the Supreme Court in the 80s during the court’s decision on the legality of betamax VCR recorders
